Phillip BialowitzThe riveting highly acclaimed drama Escape From Sobibor starring Alan Arkin and Rutger Hauer brings alive the true story of the life and revolt at Sobibor. Sobibor is one of the three notorious Nazi death camps during the Holocaust, where 250,000 people perished between 1942 and 1943. The escape from the camp, an amazing example of resistance, was the largest and most successful of its kind and liberated many of the camp’s prisoners.

The film will be followed by a firsthand account from Mr. Philip Bialowitz who participated in the rebellion and is one of the only survivors of the infamous Nazi death camp escape alive today.

Bialowitz lectures around the world about his experiences during the Holocaust and the continued importance of mutual respect among people of different races and beliefs. He has recently published his book “A Promise At Sobibor – A Jewish Boy’s Story of Revolt and Survival in Nazi-Occupied Poland”. A curriculum based on Mr. Bialowitz’s book has been developed for Polish schools by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews. Bialowitz has testified at numerous war crime trials.

The event, being held at the Lyric Theater, is a benefit event for the Chabad Jewish Center of Martin/S. Lucie, a nonprofit community based organization dedicated to enriching Jewish life with educational, religious and social programming and helping all in need from seniors to children and everyone in between. The center is a non membership based organization supported by the generosity of the community and open to all regardless of background and observance, affiliation or finances.
